May 7, 2014 -- Mineola, NY
Coalition of Nassau Civic Association Environmental Chair Gerry Ottavino spoke at a press conference held by News12 (click News12 Coverage) with Legislator Dave Denenberg, announcing that the Nassau County Legislature approved the contract between the County and the United States Geological Survey ("USGS") to monitor our aquifers.
CONCA wrote and again presented our Letter to County Executive Mangano at our March 2014 meeting, urging him to renew the County's contract with USGS, which had expired in 2010. County Executive Mangano assured us that he would look into it and we are happy to report that the contract is now renewed.
Thank you Environmental Chair Gerry Ottavino, Water Initiatives Chair Sandra D'Arcangelo, Water for Long Island and all those who joined us in pressuring the County to renew its contract.
It is imperative that our aquifers are tested and monitored, especially in light of recent findings of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and radionuclides, known carcinogens, in our estuaries. Further, data must be obtained that will determine what effect New York City's plan to tap into our aquifer will have on our aquifer and, ultimately, our drinking water.
CONCA will be following this issue closely to assure that Long Island's aquifers are pure drinking water.

Why hasn't the USGS contract been signed by the County as of yet?
